When Judith’s mother and father became ill, even her reputation as a pragmatist, a planner and a dutiful daughter (her father’s term) couldn’t prepare her for what lay ahead – a long list of concerns that included navigating an unfamiliar healthcare system, addressing financial and legal issues, dealing with stress and family dynamics, getting straight answers from doctors, and ultimately, dealing with grief and loss.

Doing what came naturally to her, she captured these experiences on paper, writing about what worked and what didn’t; about finding humor in the oddest places; and the ways in which the past, present and future often intersect.

As Judith looks back at her childhood, and reveals warm and funny stories about assisting both her parents years later, she also shares practical suggestions and critical information on topics every son and daughter should know as their own caregiving journey begins.

The Dutiful Daughter’s Guide to Caregiving is like a combination of financial planner, family therapist, geriatric care manager, and mouthy best friend. Delivered in a no-nonsense style, with a healthy dose of humor, this is a guide to buy in bulk. One for you, and the rest for all your friends with aging parents.

Excellent read that is a great guide to those entering or already into a Caregiver mode for a loved one. Judith has great humor in this book which is so impressive considering the seriousness of the subject matter. Just reading her table of contents and glossary in the back made my sister and I laugh out loud! The way she spins a story made me want to turn to the next page. Highly recommend!
Informative and engaging recommend it highly for anyone with parents still living!!
I'm enjoying the read.. I've been through pretty much all of it. still reading..... light reading not heavy
Wow. I can’t tell you how much I love this book. It’s incredibly painful, incredibly funny, incredibly helpful and incredibly well-written. Thank you, Judith for not only a practical guide to navigating some of the most challenging times in life, but a poignant and meaningful work of art!
This is an excellent sensible guide to caregiving. Filled with understanding and humor this little book has the most intelligent, comprehensive information on caregiving of any self help book I have seen in my 30 years of working with families in caregiving crisis. I have sent a copy to each of my children for their use when the time comes.
According to a report by the Pew Research Center, there are “40 million unpaid caregivers of adults ages 65 and older in the United States.” From 2007 through 2014, Judith Henry was one of that number. She quit her job and moved cross country to care for her increasing frail and failing parents.

In 21 short chapters, Henry recounts the emotional highs and lows of her caregiving journey, ending most sections with tips, tricks, bullet-point suggestions and checklists. She’s a straightforward storyteller who demonstrates a loving empathy for her parents’ end of life struggles.

This book was written and published within a year of her surviving parent’s death. Perhaps Henry wanted to get her feelings down when they were still fresh and raw. Her writing definitely hums with that immediacy, but it does so at the expense of a coherent narrative flow and structure. It’s a sweet but scattered memoir that feels more like a cathartic release than a pragmatic self-help guide.

For an intimate look at the emotional impact of longterm care on the caregiver, this 156-page book may be for you. For a more studied book about aging issues, you may want to read “When the Time Comes Families with Aging Parents Share Their Struggles and Solutions” by Paula Span or Jane Gross’s “A Bittersweet Season Caring for Our Aging Parents--and Ourselves.”
I just finished reading Judith Henry's wonderful book The Dutiful Daughter's Guide to Caregiving and oh how I wish it had been available back in 1999. Although late for me, it is certain to help many people faced with taking care of elderly parents or other family members, and those destined to take care of the aging baby boomers. I have worked in the field of death, dying and bereavement since 1985, and my training, education, and experience were trumped by the issues I faced as I watched my mother's life coming to an end. Judith Henry's book would have been a blessing and comfort. I highly recommend you buy and read it.
